NRG provides shipping solutions for Claris FileMaker Pro for over 20 years

We were recently doing some documentation cleanup and I noticed an image that looks like it could go back to 2004 or so, and it got me thinking about how long we’ve been doing shipping solutions for Claris FileMaker Pro. According to WayBack, we released our first postal solution (FileMaker Pro 4) in early 2003 and our first UPS solution (FileMaker Pro 6) in early 2004 during the Apple Aqua interface phase. (Apple recently announced macOS 26 which will have a new software design called “Liquid Glass.”)

We’ve heard objections over the years by other FileMaker Developers where they are hesitant to implement solutions that they themselves did not create because of future support. Over the past 20+ years we have continually provided award-winning support, updates and new functionality due to carrier API technology and other business changes.

NRGship provides UPS® Track Alert add-on to Pro software

Over the years we’ve had many requests for the ability to see UPS delivery photos inside of NRGship. We’re pleased to announce that we’re the first UPS Ready® solution provider to offer this functionality. Previously, you’d have to open the tracking link for UPS.com to view the photo which would be available for a limited time. Many customers then archive that photo for proof of delivery. With this new functionality it’s all contained directly in NRGship Pro for UPS which provides easy access.

UPS Track Alert also notifies immediately on delivery without the need to constantly track shipments. This can greatly reduce overhead of internal systems which use excessive resources for this task. It also improves customer service efficiency since the most recent shipment history is available.

Customers using NRGship FM for UPS can leverage UPS Track Alert webhooks directly in their solution files by using a custom webhook endpoint. Check out this support article for more details on using webhooks with Otto from Proof+Geist.

UPS SurePost® & Ground Saver® Changes

Starting April 2, 2025, UPS will replace the name SurePost® with Ground Saver® as its economy product. For Direct-to-Consumer customers looking to reduce costs while maintaining a high level of service or for those shipping lower value merchandise, UPS Ground Saver provides the efficiency and reliability of the UPS Ground network – the premier ground service in the industry. This change will appear in all shipping, billing, pricing systems and labels.

UPS Ground Saver® in NRGship for UPS

In addition, the free Declared Value Coverage will be reduced from $100 to $20/package. If additional liability is needed above $20, NRGship Pro for UPS customers can purchase InsureShield® Coverage starting at $1.00 per $100 of insured value, up to a maximum liability limit of $5,000 per package.

NRGship Pro for UPS now provides UPS Mail Innovation Rating

With the recent changes to UPS SurePost® services, UPS Mail Innovations® (MI) is a cost effective alternative to standard UPS services. Previously, there were limitations where NRGship could not provide contract rating for MI shipments but new functionality has been provided as part of our UPS Ready® partnership allowing NRGship to display these rates. This allows NRGship to provide accurate rate comparisons across all UPS service offerings.

Claris Connect deprecates UPS Mobile Connector

Recently, we were informed that Claris would be removing the UPS Mobile connector from Claris Connect in a future release.

In the past we have written articles about using Claris Connect for UPS shipping and provided demo files for comparison with the NRGship Products. While Claris Connect with the UPS Mobile connector was effective for some use cases, it was lacking in general functionality.

If you are looking to perform rating, shipping, address validation, tracking from FileMaker Pro then our NRGship FM solutions will meet your single or multi-carrier needs.

Upgrading NRGship FM for June 2024 UPS API Updates

As previously mentioned, all NRGship FM for UPS users (and users of multi-carrier Ship Connect) will need to update to current versions for UPS API compatibility before early June 2024.

Customers who are using a single carrier solution should have no issue upgrading. Customers with Ship Connect or combinations of UPS and other carriers should contact NRG Support. We have tested with versions going back to FileMaker Pro v16 however we highly recommend updating to v19 or above to take advantage of full functionality. If you are using an older version of FileMaker Pro we also provide some upgrade resources.

In the video below we will walk you thru the following steps to upgrade files hosted on FileMaker Server.

Preview your existing install for any modifications to layouts or scripts that will need to be applied after upgrading
Open your FileMaker Server (FMS) Admin Console
Within the FMS Console
- Close the four NRGship UPS files
- Download the four files from FileMaker Server to your downloads folder
- Remove files from FileMaker Server
Create a folder and drop in the downloaded files, expanding if necessary
Rename the files you just downloaded with .bak.fmp12
Download new UPS files from http://ws.nrgsoft.com/NRGship%20UPS%20Pro.zip
Drop the four new files into the folder with the .bak.fmp12 files
Open the NRGship Pro UPS file and it will ask about importing prefs/data from backup – say yes
During the preference import it’s going to ask you to login to UPS.com to link NRGship to your UPS account. This is required information.
In NRGship, go to UPS accounts tab – it should show your UPS accounts with API info
Close up files
In your existing files (the .fmp12.bak files), check for a post-shipment script and copy from backup UPS Data file if necessary
Within FileMaker Pro, upload files back to FileMaker Server
Within the FMS Console, re-open files on server
Within FileMaker Pro, be sure to apply any layout or script customization to the new files
Note that when your NRGship Account was created your previous license code was used for your password

You can also perform an update directly on the server, bypassing the need to download and upload files. When replacing files be sure to check for proper OS file permissions before re-opening on server.

Workstations will auto-update plugins as needed. If you have plugins located in older directories (ex: the FileMaker Pro application folder or Shared folder in user folders) then you will need to remove those so the plugin install can properly complete.
